Astari Nite and Old Wives Tale By Arielle Castillo

Friday night’s weekly Flamingo Fridays party at PS14 marks the first show in a while on this side of the county line for the Miami foursome Astari Nite. The band has been steadily plugging away at its chilly, Placebo-influenced rock, but recent weeks have seen it playing mostly around Broward and even West Palm Beach. Now that summer is almost here, singer Mychael Ghost and company have set to work on a proper debut EP, heading into the studio soon with Howard Melnick, formerly of Fashionista and currently of Champagne Days. They plan to release a final five-song, self-titled disc in August. And while this edition of Flamingo welcomes back Astari Nite, it also bids bon voyage to local co-headliner Old Wives Tale. Those post-punk dance-floor hoodlums will leave next week on a mini European tour that will take them through England and Spain

The Birth of King Kong Bass

Tonight there is a new party at PS14 called King Kong Bass. Basically the concept is bringing together a bunch of bass and Dubstep DJs and producers along with Hip-Hop promoters Showstomerz, and several of their artists, to create a regular bass and Dubstep party.

What I really want to focus on is Dubstep. Dubstep is a new form of electronic/dance music that developed in Bristol, England, in the early 2000’s. It has a slower feel then other electronic music and is mainly bass driven. From what I’ve read online, Dubstep grew out of the UK’s Garage and Grime. Over time it’s developed overseas to be one of the largest and most popular genres of music.

The bass-heavy Dubstep has also gained attention from the Hip Hop community due to the bass heavy beats. Recently, artists like Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Lil’ Wayne, and Pharrell Williams have been using Dubstep beats in songs, and even Pitchfork Magazine has been running regular Dubstep articles on their website.

Yet, it seems like a natural fit that Dubstep has caught fire in Miami. A traditional DJ driven music scene combined with a love of bass music has created a great market for Dubstep DJs and producers.

Miami New Times:

King Kong Bass at PS14 Starting July 18

Miami’s isn’t shy about it’s love of bass. Big-booty bass so fat that when the room shakes you could almost mistake it for an earthquake. So it’s no surprise that the dubstep genre has finally boiled over from the underground. It’s natural evolution from electro-house - think dirty, choppy beats but slowed down - means the scene and its fans are growing quickly. It also begs the question: how long until Kanye West starts taking credit for making dubstep popular?

On the heels of successful one-time dubstep events, like The Vagabond’s monthly Get Low party, comes King Kong Bass at PS14 (28 NE 14th Street, Miami). Notorious Nastie, Juan BassHead and REVMiami.com have partnered up to deliver a party that is being described as “bananas” by Nastie himself. “There gonna be a guy in a gorilla suit walking around,” he adds. And with BassHead, Wreck, Peasant with Feathers, Serge Roc, Keen and more on the bill for July 18, PS14 might have a few speakers blow out before the 5 a.m. closing time.
